Wrong translation

Hi, I see something wrong in the translation.

Les garçons sont revenus ! with the translation The boys are back!

I think it should be "the boys were back".

This question relates to:French lesson "Agreeing past participle with subject's gender and number with (+ être) verbs in the compound past in French (Le Passé Composé)"

'The boys are back' is another way of saying 'The boys have returned' , which is a passé composé. Les garçons sont revenus is passé composé. 'The boys were back' seems like le plus-que-parfait (pluperfect) tense: Les garçons étaient revenus..
