Few people know that Bayonne is the chocolate capital of France. This town is not only renowned for its high-quality chocolate, but its history has been linked to chocolate for centuries, thanks to its proximity to the Spanish border, as well as (to) its trading harbour. By the middle of the 18th century, the Jewish community who lived in Bayonne had developed the chocolate trade throughout the kingdom of France. At the time, there were about thirty-four chocolate shops in Bayonne! As a result, chocolate became an extremely popular delicacy, especially among the most affluent families. Many of the chocolatiers who had established their business there in the 19th century are still thriving today, such as Cazenave and Daranatz.
