why? Rue is feminine. Or why not just à .  Or is this another one of those times when french just works that way and there's no logical reason?

I think it’s because the address is actually “au 56, rue Balzac” (meaning at the number 56, Balzac Street) and numbers are masculine in French. LE numéro 56.

Ah. That makes sense. Just like dates.
