Can après-midi be either masculine or feminine in this expression? I was not marked wrong when I used "bon".

yes, après-midi can be used in the masculine or feminine form.

See Larousse under ‘Difficultes/Genre’, and also the Académie Française entry, noting its recommendation to preference the masculine form.
