The son WAS born in the past? Why then use "est né" rather that "était né"?

Naître already means "to be born". In French this isn't a passive construction as it would be in English.
Je suis né en France. -- I was born in France.
L'amour naît d'un grand coeur. -- Love is born from a big heart.
