"Look" with the sense of "search"

"Look" with the sense of "search"

In the writing challenge "I can't find my shirt" the transation for the partial sentence " I must not have looked properly" offers several choices but all use "regarder" - e.g. "Je n'ai pas dû regarder proprement". In this context I belive "looked" implies "searched (for it)" rather than "gazed (at it)". In view of that ought not the translation "chercher" to be allowed as an alternative to "regarder"? In fact can "regarder" be used here at all?
