In French, is the apostrophe really used in this way? It looks like an English possessive apostrophe.

No, the apostrophe isn’t used this way in French. However in this case the registered company name is ‘ McDonald’s ’, even in France. Therefore ‘ chez McDonald’s ‘ or ‘ de McDonald’s ‘, when using its registered name.

For what it's worth, MacDonald's is most often referred to as Macdo in everyday French.
