can I say j'ai mieux couru que toi? doest it work
I think in this case you would need to use "J'ai couru mieux que toi". My understanding is that you cannot separate out mieux que when using the comparative adverb mieux to talk about an action being done better by someone than by someone else, so that mieux que stays together in this situation and is placed after the verb phrase.
You might find it useful to look at the examples at point 2 in the section on using the adverb bien and its comparative mieux in the following lesson:
Meilleur, mieux, pire / plus mauvais, plus mal = better, best, worse and worst in French (irregular comparatives and superlatives)
I hope this helps :)
