but we do say tu n'avais envie ni DE sortir ni DE voir du monde?

Gerald, the ‘ de ‘ is necessary in the 2nd sentence because the verbal expression is ‘ avoir envie de …’.

The verb ‘ vouloir ‘ however does not take the preposition ‘ de ‘ following it in this context.
