Hi John,
Patrick va mal --> Patrick is unwell (physical or emotionally health-wise)
Patrick sent mal mauvais --> Patrick smells bad
If you want to use sentir to express a more emotional health aspect you would need to use the verb reflexive se sentir.
Patrick se sent mal. --> Patrick feels emotionally (or physically) unwell/bad.
Always according to the context.
