My reading of this is that Sophie's mother has always been protective of her daughter, Sophie (think helicopter mom) and that now, given her own divorce, the mom is trying to make sure that her daughter doesn't experience the same. Clearly, Sophie is trying to make excuses for her mother's interference. Sounds like a nightmare to me.
