Punctuation use of exclamation marks

When was the "point" (full stop) replaced with the exclamation mark in French?   There seem very few occasions when the point is acceptable: But the exclamation mark seems mandatory in most circumstances.

True, explamation points are more frequent in French. You use them when you want to express excitement or exuberance of the speaker. I don't know about mandatory, though. It all depends on your style.
