The verb to have

I am confused about how to say have and when it is used.  In English I use it to show  possession I have. I can also use it to ask for something I will have (asking for something as in food or object)  Can you help with my confusion.

Bonjour Diana,

Using pouvoir conjugated in question format, followed by avoir as an infinitive, you could say:-

"Puis-je avoir....."  This is very formal, (may I be able to have) but also very polite. It takes the form "May I have ...." in English, which is, in my experience, how a French person may ask for something when asking politely, when visiting England.

Bonne continuation

Jim
