Bonjour Cori,
Given that "un vrai ami" --> a real or true friend. I agree that "Un vrai nom" would translate to a real or true name ie. that name given at birth.
As against the construction using s'appeler where the meaning is to simply call oneself. This construction may or may not be the birth name.
