The sentence from Aug 1 RFI. Why the pronoun Y? What is it replacing, since I don't see an "a + verb" or a place that is normally replaced.
La tension monte entre les États-Unis et la Chine. La numéro 3 de l'État américain pourrait se rendre à Taïwan, mais Pékin ne reconnait pas l'indépendance de cet État et y voit une provocation.Use of the pronoun Y

Here is the sentence without the full phrase substituted for y:
Pékin voit à la viste de la numéro 3 de l'Ètat américain une provocation. -- Peking sees the visit of the number 3 of America as a provocation.
Pékin y voit une provocation. -- Peking sees ("therein") in it a provocation. Or, with a better flow in English: Peking sees this as a provocation.
You also may not have come across other uses of 'y' such as in the linked lesson (B1 level) : 'y' can replace 'à + noun group' that refers to location/place, things/objects, but not people.
