Hello Wanda,
As a rule of thumb that I use,
Ce que + nom + verbe
Ce qui + verbe
The correct sentence would be "Sophie a compris ce que le prof lui demandait"

I think I know what is wrong. Was it supposed to be ce que instead of ce qui?
