Why is heroes singular Les heroes vont why is it va

Asked 7 months ago

Hi Angela,

I have found the kwiz question -

le héros ___ dans la maison hantée

so 'va' is correct because as Maarten correctly states, the word 'héros' has an -s in the singular form.

So the important word was 'le' and not 'les' in this particular case.

But good question!

Angela,

I can’t see the example you are referencing but the correct expressions would be either ‘ le héros va … ‘ or ‘ les héros vont ..  ‘.

The masculine noun ‘ héros ‘ has an ‘h aspiré’, and ends in terminal ‘ s ‘ in singular and plural form.

The feminine forms are ‘ l’héroïne va… ‘ or ‘ les héroïnes vont ..‘,  as ‘ héroïne ‘ starts with an h muët, and does not have a terminal  ‘ s ‘ in singular form.

If you think there is a mistake somewhere, best to report directly from the test, or separately to support.

Lost.  At A1 level, I get quizzes in English, demanding English answers.  I assume I'm being asked to guess the French equivalent.  Totally clueless.  Really vexing.

Va, sorry, not vas

Although "on" is used to mean "we," it is a third person singular part of speech and is always conjugated like il / elle, which is why the answer was "va". It may also be translated as "one," as is "On ne doit pas parler pendant un film" "One should not talk during a film."

Hi Meher,

I can confirm that it would be -

On va

or

Nous allons

How do we read the year in a date? how do we speak it?

Asked 7 years ago
AurélieKwiziq Head of French, Native French TeacherCorrect answer
Bonjour Jose !

There are two ways to say a year in French:
- you either read it as a normal number:
1820 = mille huit cent vingt (one thousand eight hundred and twenty)
- or you divide in the middle:
1820 = dix-huit *cent* vingt (eighteen hundred twenty)

I hope that's helpful!
À bientôt !
