Pourquoi utilise-t-on le singulier pour traduire "in the mountains" mais le pluriel pour traduire "in the Alpes" alors que les deux sont pluriels en anglais?

Hi Kate,
When you speak generally you will say:
"Je vais à la montagne, (à la mer/ à la campagne) pour mes vacances cette année"
But to speak specifically you will say:
"Je vais dans les Alpes, dans les Pyrénées, dans les Vosges" ...
