"...a little note."

Would "un petit mot" work as a translation here? I feel like I've come across this much more often than "note", or maybe there's some nuance I'm missing?

The English sentence was "From now on, we will have to give each other at least one compliment a day, either in person or by leaving a little note, and also thank each other for something the other did."
