Well, I am taking a grammar lesson now. My teacher says that we say J'aime la France, but J'aime Cuba, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Singapour, Chypre, Israël
Some of these may be easy exceptions as they are islands, and islands are treated differently, I can't verify any reasons for the others. (Singapore is like a city state, perhaps)

Bonjour Diana, Here is a lesson that explains the use of «la» when talking about a country. Using le, la, l', les with continents, countries & regions names (definite articles) Unfortunately Cuba is not listed on this lesson: however, I believe the same rules apply. Keep in mind; however, that Cuba is masculine so it would be «le Cuba». J'espère que ma réponse vous aiderait. C'est une bonne question, Diana à laquelle, je crois, il n'y a pas une réponse simple. Il faut simplement l'apprendre par coeur. On dit "J'aime le Mexique" me "j'aime Cuba" (sans article). -- Chris (not a native speaker)
