Yes, you can say -

J'aime le chocolat = I like chocolate

and even stronger -

J'adore le chocolat = I love chocolate 

It is with people that it can be tricky.

If you say -

J'aime David = I love David    (and can be seen as a love declaration!)

J'aime bien David = I like David
