Ambiguous question.
"Le 25 au matin, on découvrit nos cadeaux," is ambiguous, but the only answer accepted is passé simple. "Le 25" is not sufficient context to rule out présent since Christmas comes every year. I would add "dérnier" or maybe go with a different question.
This question relates to:French lesson "Recognising -ir verbs in the historic past in French (Le Passé Simple)"

Hi Tim,
This Kwiz question is asking you which is the correct translation for this statement in the passé simple.
The other possibilities given are -
On the morning of the 25th, we discover our gifts ( present tense)
On the morning of the 25th, we will discover our gifts ( future tense))
On the morning of the 25th, we were discovering our gifts ( imparfait)
So only we discovered would be correct, no ambiguity there.

Hi Tim,
Not sure if you are referring to a quiz but since this lesson is about learning the Passé Simple, I am just assuming that it was required in your answer?
Hope this helps!

'on découvrit' can only be passé simple, because the present tense would be 'on découvre'. The verb 'découvrir' doesn't follow the finir conjugation.
