Asking questions

HI,

In this workbook I'm practicing in that I brought. I had to translate using inversion and vous if necessary. So the sentence was

When is she arriving in Nantes? I put Quand arrive -t-elle à Nantes but then their answer said I should've used à quelle heure.

Why should I use à quelle heure instead of quand when the question is asking when?

Thanks

Hi Nicole,

We do not normally comment on material from other sources but if you look at the following Kwiziq lesson you will find your answers -

Forming inverted questions with names, things and emphasis

Hope this helps!

Hi Nicole,

Without sight of the actual text, I have to speculate.

My thought is that with Quand (when) we don't know about the time frame unless the context makes it clear.

Quand could refer to which month/week/day?

If the context required a close timeframe - hour (say) then "à quelle heure" is requiring a clear specific time period in the future.

Hope this helps.

Jim
