Certain(e)s d'entre - only for people or also for things

I have not seen any examples or reference to using the phrase when the subject is/are thing/s rather than people. I may be missing something very basic here, but can the phrase be used with things, or only when the pronouns represent people? If it can be used, is it actually used?

Hi Maarten,

The expression certains d'entre eux /elles  can be used for people or things.

Here are a few examples relating to objects -

Je suis allée au magasin de bricolage pour choisir des carreaux de faïence. Certains d’entre eux me plaisent beaucoup mais sont trop chers .

Les chemises proposées dans ce catalogue sont magnifiques, certaines d’entre elles pourraient m’aller.

I hope this helps!
