How can I know whether the city contains a definite article or not? Is there some rule?

This question relates to:French lesson "À = To/in and De = From/of with cities in French (French Prepositions of Location)"

Hi NA,

There is no rule dictating which cities take or article or not (as with any other language) so it's a case of learning which ones do, as there are far more who don't -

Le Havre, Le Caire, La Hague, etc.
