I am not sure about the UK but in America you play ON a team or FOR a team. You never play IN a team.

it’s a regional difference.
In Australia, ‘ in the (a) team‘ is fine, especially as used here in the qualified sense of ‘ He plays in the local team ‘. On, for, with - all are also used from time to time.

In the UK you play in a local team, on sounds weird to me! For is used more with named teams, eg he used to play for Arsenal
