Since the reference to the laboratory is general, why is it not en laboratoire? In the lesson being dans la classe is specific but en classe is general....

In the lab, we do experiments. -- Dans le laboratoire nous faisons des expériences.
It is a statement about the room, as if you were saying, "In the classroom we read a lot." Here, too, you would say dans la classe. But "In class we read a lot" would be en classe nous lisons beaucoup.
