Is this a physical taking down or can it be a taking down of his power?

I think it means he assassinated the Godfather, or had him assassinated. See the failed attempt to do just that in "The Godfather, Part I".

So, ignoring the fact that one cannot actually "get off" a beanstalk. then, if "Jack est descendu du haricot magique" means he got off the beanstalk, have I understood correctly that "Jack a descendu haricot magique" means he climbed down the beanstalk?
