It depends what they were asking of you, I suspect it was the exercise as normally it would be,
faire de l'exercice physique
Il faut que tu fasses l'exercice = You have to do the exercise

Faire de l'exercise -- To do (some unspecified) exercise / to exercise (in a general way).
Faire l'exercise -- to do the (a specific) exercise.
