Is fils strictly to be used only in context of describing family and relatives?

Hi Mathieu,

https://www.wordreference.com/

fils nm(homme autochtone) (figurative)son n C'est un fils du pays ! He's a son of this region!

So generally the term would mean "son" in a family context but as you will see from above it can be used in a more figurative sense.

Garçon can be a lad, boy, waiter, son

Hope this helps.

Jim
