I was surprised to see my use of "cet après-midi" corrected to "cette après-midi". So I looked it up and found that both genders are used for that phrase.

You are right that both "cet" and "cette" are correct with the word "après-midi". I checked the exercise and both spellings are already accepted. It's possible that part of your answer was crossed in red due to the wrong punctuation. I will pass this on to the French language team.
