On mine, on the keyboard, where there is a globe icon, I have selected predictive and Français (France).

In general, even if you don't have the French keyboard activated, you can do a long tap on the letter (e.g., "e") and you will be offered all accented versions of that latter to choose from.

Thank you for your reply. I have tried your suggestion but only the first part worked! The various accent options appeared but I could not insert one in the text. The ‘e’ remained obstinately unaccented. Further advice, please!
