What is the difference between 'Alors' and 'Puis'

Which writing exercise are you talking about?
Generally, there are not synonyms.
The adverb 'alors' is more 'so' whereas 'puis' ( or ensuite) is 'then' but without context it is difficult to be more precise.

You can think of alors as "so" and puis as "then". Puis is used to introduce a temporal sequence whereas alors is used in a causal sequence.
