What is wrong with saying “j’ai trouvé
leur livre” for “I found their book”? Isn’t it the same as “j’ai trouvé le livre des enfants “?

Hi Peter,
It is simply because in these lesson test questions we are testing one way of saying something, in this case using the preposition de to indicate possession and not possessive adjectives so it wouldn't be accepted in these kind of limited exercises.
