Why does "de" mean "in" here?

Hi James,
If the sentence had been -
Ma grand-mère avait les plus beaux rosiers du village = My grandmother had the most beautiful rosebushes in the village
It might make more sense to you.
It is just that we say 'de' = of
rather than 'in' as in English.
