in the sentence "J'adorais parler de livres" why de and not des? there is no adjective.

This is speaking of books in general.
if you wanted to say -
I used to love speaking of the books I was reading at the moment with ...
then, you would use :
'des = de +les '
J'adorais parler des livres que j'étais en train de lire avec ...
