pas beaucoup vs pas assez

We're trying to say his colleagues didn't like him much. The answer is "ne l'aimaient pas beaucoup." How about "ne l'aimaient pas assez"? If assez is not acceptable, can someone explain the difference? Thanks.

pas beaucoup -- not much.
