Can we say il y avait beaucoup de "personnes" instead of "gens"?

Hi Supratik, 

No, you can't , if there were few people you could say -

Il n'y avait que quelques personnes There were only a few people

and you couldn't use 'gens' in this case.

But you can say -

Il y avait beaucoup de gens/ beaucoup de monde 

or 

Il y avait plein de gens/ plein de monde

Very odd !
