Prepositions for States

Bonjour,

For states which preposition do we use?  For example to say I live in Michigan would it be:

J'habite à Michigan ou J'habite au Michigan.

J'habite à Michigan

It depends on the state, but for Michigan you would say "J'habite au Michigan."

It's important to note that it will either be au, en, or dans le (dans l'). The exception is Hawaii because à is also used with islands (J'habite à Hawaii)

James, “dans le Michigan” as per original post. “Au” is used with very few states/provinces as noted in the lesson linked there.
