“if he lost a game that they were playing together.”
“s'il perdait à un jeu auquel ils étaient en train de jouer ensemble.”
“s'il perdait à un jeu auquel ils jouaient ensemble.”

I think you are thinking of the verbe 'perdre quelque chose' which is to lose something.
This is -
perdre à quelque chose
which means to lose at something like a game.
