At the time of France Gall, children didn't go to school on Thursdays so to say -
means that school wouldn't exist.
Children have always blamed Charlemagne for inventing school!
Here is a sweet page on how school might have been at that time-
L’école primaire de mes souvenirs, 1960-1970
Bonne Continuation !
Not sure if you are asking for the translation of the phrase, or an interpretation of the song? For the first, if you click on any line in the text in these exercises, you will see the contextual translation.
"There would only be Thursdays" is the translation given here - reading the poem in both French and English with the included side notes, noting the tone and tongue-in-cheek nature of the song as referenced in the introductory description, is probably the best way to confirm the interpretation.
I'm sorry, Maarten, but in my opinion, your answer doesn’t address the point of the question, one which I was asking myself.
What is spécial about le jeudi ? As long as I have lived in France, Thursday is the same as Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.
(As another writer pointed out, kids get out of school around Noon on Wednesdays, in order to attend catéchisme classes.)
Laura - the side notes do cover exactly what Cécile has covered. That is where I found it.
