Hi! Could anyone elaborate on why "à part" is incorrect au lieu que "séparément" as well as "poursuivre" for "continuer"? Thanks in advance!

Hi Hope,
1. Mais mes parents jouent séparément = but my parents play separately
à part can mean somewhere else ( i.e. in another room perhaps), here it means the parents don't play together
2. Si ça continue = If this carries on
you cannot use 'poursuivre' here as it means to follow/to chase, as in to pursue something.
Hope this helps!
séparément -- separately.
à part -- apart
poursuivre -- pursue
I find that these three words have a very clear English translation.
The pronominal < se poursuivre > is an option for 'continues' (carries on), but not < poursuivre >.
