Relative pronouns

Please will you explain the answer to this question :  How could you say "The boys with whom Marie is playing are her brothers." ?
The answer  given in the quiz is that that the first and second answers are correct. I don't understand why " avec quelles " is correct  and not " avec qui"

Les garçons avec lesquels Marie joue sont ses frères.Les garçons avec quelles Marie joue sont ses frères.Les garçons avec qui Marie joue sont ses frères.

Hi Hetty,

This is the Kwiziq lesson explaining when to use quel, quelle, quels, quelles which means what or which.

/revision/grammar/how-to-express-what-a-with-quel-quelle-quels-quelles

Hope this helps!

Hi Hetty,

To be honest, I'm a bit puzzled over this.

Clearly to me the indirect object is the boys with whom Marie is playing (jouer à)

We need a relative pronoun to express this aspect. So I would expect to see avec quels (masculine plural) not quelles (female plural) or lesquels, and I think that avec qui (whom) is also valid.

I'm looking forward to reading what one of the French ladies will comment because there may be an error that should be flagged up.

Jim
