aller voir  is very commonly used.  Je suis allée voir mon amie.            also venir voir to say "come visit".  Example:

Mon amie est venue me voir.

according to French Today, my prof gave those 2 examples.  Rendre visite à quelqu'un  is like saying I paid a visit to someone.  It is used also but this seems a bit more formal in English & also in French.
