Why is « merci » not accepted as correct? My understanding is les guillemets (double angle brackets «») are the standard quotation marks and double quotes ("") are only used when quoting within a quote, for example, « something "else" ».

Bonjour William,

Thank you for your comment! Accepting French guillemets is a little bit complicated. We also decided not to in order to facilitate people's typing (i.e. not everyone knows or has the possibility to type French guillemets from their keyboard or the different device they use). 

However, I will pass this on to my colleague for further discussion.
