One of the answers given I think was written with "que l'on" rather than "qu'on", i.e.
si vous ne voulez pas que l'on parte plus tôt.
Are both correct. If so can you please explain the use of l' . I don't understand why we would use l' here.

Bonjour Rory,
Chris is right! It is far more elegant and used for euphonic reasons. It sounds much better, it helps to avoid hiatus (two vowel sounds side by side - 'de quoi on parle / de quoi l'on parle' about what we are talking). And like in the sentence above 'que l'on' helps to avoid the contraction 'qu'on' which sounds like the dreaded vulgar word 'con'.
