Singular or plural?

Singular or plural?

"Je n'ai pas de X."

Should "X" be in the singular form or in the plural? Does it depend on which form it was in in the question?

eg. "Avez-vous une voiture ?" -> "Je n'ai pas de voiture." but "Avez-vous des chaussures ?" -> "Je n'ai pas de chaussures." ?

Bonjour Daniel,

That's a really interesting question!

Generally, it depends on the form the word was in in the question/sentence/when it was first mentioned. However, it's also important to consider the context and the item as a whole.

Avez-vous des chaussures ? - Je n'ai pas de chaussures

Avez-vous une voiture ? - Je n'ai pas de voiture

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !
