Sont vs. ont été

The English “the film industry and film stars have been two of my greatest passions.”

—> in the exercise —>

“l'industrie du cinéma et les stars de cinéma sont deux de mes plus grandes passions.”

But why is it “sont” instead of something like “ont été”?

Bonjour Brian,

It is actually because of the sentence before using 'depuis' -

Depuis que je suis enfant, ... les stars de cinéma sont ...

Take a look at the following lesson explaining it all -

Using the present tense (Le Présent) - and not the compound past (Le Passé Composé) - in sentences with "depuis" (since/for) in French (French Prepositions of Time)

Hope this helps!

Bonjour Brian,

Both the film industry and film stars are a great passion, and this is ongoing in the present.

Therefore, the présent indicatif is appropriate rather than the passé composé.

This is how I see it  --  I hope it helps.

Bonne journée

Jim
