Taking a class

How many ways are there to say "to take a class" and which is the most and least formal?

This question relates to:
French writing exercise "Muscle ache"

"Prendre un cours" et "suivre un cours". Je ne suis pas sûr de la formalité, mais "suivre un cours" peut sous-entendre que quelqu'un est plus actif dans ses études que "prendre un cours".

Ça fait du sens à moi.  Merci pour ton explication. C'est la même chose en anglais à mon avis.
