Could garder instead of tenir be used to "Keep a diary"
Tenir vs Garder

Bonjour Stephen,
Chris is correct that 'garder un journal' would mean "keeping the item":
Je garde mes affaires = I keep my belongings
Je tiens un journal = I keep a diary (i.e. I am keeping a record about my life)
I hope this is helpful.
Bonne journée !
